Day after the bodies of two teenage girls were found hanging from a tree in a mango orchard outside a village in Fatehgarh, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra slammed the Uttar Pradesh government on Wednesday, questioning whether Dalits, backward classes, the deprived, the poor, and women should now give up hope for justice.

The incident took place on Monday when two Dalit girls, aged 18 and 15, went to a nearby temple around 10 pm to celebrate Janmashtami but did not return home, according to the police. Both were from Bhagautipur village.

On Tuesday, their bodies were found hanging from a tree in a mango orchard outside a village in Fatehgarh. The police have launched an investigation, initially treating it as a case of double suicide.”

Taking to her official handle on X, Congress General Secretary Priyanka Gandhi posed serious questions: “Why does a father have to raise these questions after such a horrific incident? Doesn’t a victim’s father have the right to know the truth about the treatment meted out to his daughter? Why is the administration in a hurry to cremate the bodies of the girls?”

She expressed concern over the administration’s handling of the case, suggesting it mirrors previous incidents in Hathras and Unnao. “Be it Hathras, Unnao, or Farrukhabad—the same cruel story is repeated everywhere,” Gandhi said.

Sharing a video of the father of the deceased girls seeking justice, she questioned, “So should the Dalits, backward, deprived, poor, women, or whoever is weak, give up hope of justice now?”.

The incident has drawn sharp criticism from various political parties, including the Samajwadi Party, Congress, and Aam Aadmi Party. SP chief Akhilesh Yadav has stressed the need to prioritise women’s safety over party politics and called for an impartial inquiry into the matter.
