In a significant step towards modernising Mumbai’s transportation infrastructure, the first double-decker flyover in the Mumbai Metropolitan Region (MMR) was inaugurated on Wednesday by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde. The innovative structure, located in Mira Bhayandar, Thane district, seamlessly integrates a viaduct for Metro Line 9 with a road flyover, spanning one kilometer.

Enhanced Traffic Flow and Connectivity

The new flyover aims to improve traffic flow at critical junctions on Mira Road, providing relief to thousands of daily commuters. Metro Line 9, an extension of the Red Line from Andheri to Mumbai International Airport and Dahisar to Mira Road, will benefit from this development, enhancing regional connectivity.

Chief Minister Shinde praised the project, saying,”The double-decker flyover in the Mumbai metropolitan region marks a significant achievement for Mumbai and Maharashtra. This project addresses traffic issues, saves time and fuel, and is a testament to modern technology and efficient planning. It will accelerate the development of MMR and improve overall traffic flow and commuter comfort.”

The flyover was constructed using advanced technology, featuring separate levels for metro and road transport. Officials anticipate that it will save 8 to 10 minutes of travel time and reduce fuel consumption. The structure includes modern amenities like furniture, signage, and lighting, adhering to Ministry of Road Transport and Highways’ regulations.

Construction faced challenges, notably relocating the Dahanu-Versova power line, which was elevated to 75 meters. MMRDA Commissioner Sanjay Mukherjee highlighted that this project represents a new approach to urban transportation, crucial for Mumbai’s growth and development.
